How do I create a Master?
A master is a sample page that includes some basic layout features that you want to have appear on every page of your document. When you create a new page, you also specify which master you want the page to be based on.
So, for example, if you put a big red star in middle of your Master page and you create 10 new pages, all based on your Master, then each of those 10 new pages will have a big red star in the middle but you won’t be able to edit that star. So if you wanted to have a line at the top and bottom of every page you could put it in the master. If you wanted page numbers on every page you could put that in the master. Anything put in the master will appear on every page that is based on that master. Editing the master will change the background items for every page that refers to that master.
When you create a master you can create left-hand side and right-hand side masters. So you can put a red star on all of your left-hand pages and a blue star on all of your right-hand pages simply by editing the original master.
- To create a new master, click on the very small arrow next to three lines at the top right-hand side of the Pages palette. Alternatively, right click in the top half of the palette, and you will get the options for editing and creating Masters.
- From the drop-down menu choose New Master.
- Fill out the information, giving a logical prefix for your masters (this prefix will be used to label the pages in your pages palette so you know which page uses which master.) Then click OK.
- The master will appear in the top half of the pages palette. If you double-click on it, it will open for editing in your main window. You can make any changes to it that you would like.
