Microsoft Word- Customizing Automatic Settings

To turn off automatic bulleted lists:

  • Open Microsoft Word
  • Under the “Tools” menu, choose “AutoCorrect Options…” (“AutoCorrect” on Macintosh)
  • Choose “AutoFormat” from the tabs at the top of the dialog box.
  • Uncheck “Automatic bulleted lists.”
  • Choose “AutoFormat as you type” from the tabs at the top of the dialog box.
  • Uncheck “Automatic bulleted lists” and “Automatic numbered lists.”
  • Click “OK.”

To turn off spell-checking as you type (red squiggly lines under words) and grammar-checking as you type (green squiggly lines under words or phrases):

Windows:

  • Under the “Tools” menu, choose “Options…”
  • Choose “Spelling and Grammar” from the tabs at the top of the dialog box.
  • Uncheck “Check spelling as you type” and “Check grammar as you type.”
  • Click “OK.”

Macintosh:

  • From the “Word” menu, choose “Preferences.”
  • Choose “Spelling and Grammar” from the sidebar.
  • Uncheck “Check spelling as you type” and “Check grammar as you type.”

  • Click "OK."
