Timelines are excellent tools for enriching lessons and helping students study class material. They can also outline a course's progress and major assignment dates. Either way, they provide a great visual for the progression of time. Some timeline applications even incorporate images, audio, video, and links to create an interactive presentation that can be embedded in Moodle, Powerpoint, or Keynote.
